Oud Perfume

Oud is the note Arabian perfumery is built around, and it is worth understanding what you are actually buying.

What oud is

Agarwood forms when a species of tropical tree is infected by a particular mould. The tree responds by saturating the affected wood with a dark resin, and it is that resin — not the wood itself — that carries the scent. The process takes years and affects only a fraction of trees, which is why genuine oud oil is among the most expensive materials in perfumery, priced by the gram.

Almost every oud fragrance at an accessible price uses a reconstruction rather than distilled oil. That is not a criticism: a good reconstruction gives the smoky, resinous, slightly animalic character people want, consistently and without the cost. What it does mean is that the word oud on a bottle describes a register, not an ingredient list.

The families

Oud and rose is the classic pairing, and the most common — the flower softens the resin and the resin stops the flower turning sweet. Oud and saffron is the second: leathery, slightly bitter, and the opening of a great many Gulf compositions. Sweet oud puts praline, vanilla or amber underneath, which is what made the category travel outside the region. And dry oud — incense, myrrh, sandalwood, no sugar — is the most traditional and the least commercial.

How to wear it

Less than you think. Oud is the most persistent material in perfumery: one or two sprays lasts a full day on skin and considerably longer on fabric. Evening and cooler months suit it; in daytime heat a resinous oud amplifies quickly and becomes difficult to sit next to.

Give it twenty minutes before judging. The opening of an oud composition is rarely what you will be wearing an hour later.

Choosing an oud perfume

Oud, or agarwood, is the backbone of Gulf perfumery. It is one of the few materials that holds its shape in heat, which is why it runs through so much of what is worn here rather than the light citrus openings common in European releases.

The two ways oud is sold

Concentrated oil is applied by roll-on or dab to pulse points. A little goes a long way and it stays close to the skin. Eau de parfum carries oud in an alcohol base, projects further and covers more ground in a single application.

Which oud suits you

  • Rose and saffron oud: warmer and softer, widely worn by both men and women
  • Leather, tobacco or smoky oud: heavier, better after sunset and in cooler months
  • Vanilla or amber oud: sweeter and easier to wear day to day
