Men's perfumery in the Gulf splits cleanly in two, and knowing which side you are on saves a lot of time.

On one side, the fresh masculines: citrus and aromatic at the top, woody-amber underneath, built around ambroxan for radiance. These are the bottles that work in heat — office, daytime, summer — and they are the safest recommendation for someone who does not yet know what they like.

On the other, the traditional register: oud, saffron, leather, incense and spice. Deep, resinous and long-wearing, worn in the evening and in the cooler months. This is where Gulf perfumery has its identity, and where the more interesting compositions are.

How to choose

Start from the occasion rather than the note list. If the fragrance has to survive a working day at 45 degrees, take the fresh route. If it is for a majlis, a wedding or a winter evening, take the oud route — and apply less than you think, because these project further than European equivalents.

The middle ground exists too: fougères built on lavender and spice, and woody-aromatics that stay dry rather than sweet. They move from day to evening without changing character, which makes them the practical single-bottle answer.
