The accord

Oud on its own is austere and can be difficult to live with in a home. The gourmand side here is what makes it a household bakhoor rather than a formal one - warm rather than solemn, and easier to burn on an ordinary evening than a pure resinous blend would be.

Clothes and hair, not just rooms

Bakhoor is not only a home fragrance. Holding an abaya, a kandura or loose hair over the smoke for a few seconds carries the scent far longer than any spray will, and it is how the format has been worn in the Gulf for centuries.

How to burn it

A small piece on a lit charcoal disc in a mabkhara, or on an electric burner. A fingernail-sized piece is enough for a room. Ventilate afterwards.
