Bakhoor Oud Black by Nabeel: natural wood chips, in a 60 g block, at the darker end of the house's range.
What "black" signals
In bakhoor, a darker name usually points to a deeper roast on the wood and a heavier, more resinous smoke - closer to the raw material than to a blended, softened accord. It is the choice for someone who wants oud's actual character rather than a version rounded off with sweetness.
How to burn it
Place charcoal in a mabkhara, light it and wait for the first embers to glow properly. Set a small piece of bakhoor on top and let the aroma develop. Cover with a ceramic lid to extinguish safely once you are done, rather than letting the charcoal burn out unattended.
A fingernail-sized piece is enough for a room. Walk clothes and hair through the smoke, then ventilate.
