Bakhoor Al Warda — al warda is Arabic for the rose — is El Nabil's incense built the traditional way, on oud wood chips soaked in aromatic oils.

Bakhoor is not a perfume you wear. It is a blend of oud wood, musk, spices, herbs and fragrant resins, burned to scent a room, clothes and hair. It is what a Gulf household lights before guests arrive, and what gives a majlis its smell.

How to burn it. Light a charcoal disc, wait until it stops sparking and turns grey at the edges, then place two or three chips on top. Never more: bakhoor is meant to perfume, not to smoke out a room. It will burn for ten to fifteen minutes and the scent will hold for hours afterwards.

Where to put the burner. On a stable, heat-proof surface, away from curtains, and never unattended. To scent clothes, hold the fabric open above the smoke for a few seconds — do not drape it over the burner. Ventilate afterwards; the smell settles better in air that has moved.

Store the chips sealed and away from heat, or the oils dry out and the wood loses its scent.
