The accord

Oud on its own is austere and can be difficult in a home. The rose and vanilla here are what make it a household bakhoor rather than a formal one - warm and soothing rather than solemn, which is why this composition is a fixture in Gulf homes.

How to burn it

A small piece on a lit charcoal disc in a mabkhara, or on an electric burner - which is easier indoors and gives no smoke from the charcoal itself. A piece the size of a fingernail scents a room; more produces smoke rather than more fragrance.

Walk clothes and hair through the smoke to carry the scent, the way it is traditionally worn. Ventilate afterwards.
